I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Eternal Life, Life in Your Son--Dec. 27, 2014

Answer us when we seek you, O God;
and deliver us from all our fears.

We rejoice before you always;
daily you are our delight.

You give us eternal life,
which is life in your Son.

We will love one another
and show we are your disciples.

Selected Verses
Ps. 34:4
 I sought the LORD, and he answered me,
          and delivered me from all my fears.

Prov. 8:30
            …then I was beside [the LORD], like a master worker;
and I was daily his delight,
            rejoicing before him always.

1 John 5:11
And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

John 13:35
"…By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
