I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

God's Foolishness--Sept. 18, 2017

[From Sept. 12, 2011 archive]

It is foolishness to distribute our money to the poor;
they will waste it.

It is foolish for the powerful to yield to the defenseless;
power is to be used to one's advantage.

It is ridiculous to value your word above our daily bread;
at that rate we will all starve.

The message about the cross is all foolishness,
but it is your power at work.

They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor ...

1 Kings 21:15
As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, "Go, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead."

1 Cor. 1:18
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

But [Jesus] answered [the tempter],
"It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone,
            but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
