I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

1 Peter 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead ...

Matthew 19:1
When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.

III. Meditation: With my whole heart, O Most High
Jesus, you told the people things, things of crucial importance, and then you left. It is up to those who heard to tell others. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! You roar from Zion, and utter your voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth shake. But you are a refuge and stronghold for your people. By your great mercy you have given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. I will give thanks to you with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
