I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Genesis 9:20-21
Noah, a man of the soil, was the first to plant a vineyard. He drank some of the wine and became drunk, and he lay uncovered in his tent.

Hebrews 6:7
Ground that drinks up the rain falling on it repeatedly, and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.

John 3:27
John answered, "No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven.

III. Meditation: What Noah should have known
Noah was a man of the soil,
and he planted a vineyard.
He drank its wine and became drunk;
and this led to embarrassment,
for which he blamed his son.

Nothing we receive is of value,
unless it has been given by you;
help us drink up your showers of rain,
that the crops we grow may be useful to you,
and we may receive your blessing.

Then we will not need old Noah's wine
to make us lie down
and sleep in peace;
for you alone, dear God,
make us lie down in safety.
