I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 32, 42, 84, 150
Genesis 48:8-22
Romans 8:11-25
John 6:27-40

II. Selections
Psalm 32:2
Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

Genesis 48:10
Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, and he could not see well. So Joseph brought [ his two sons] near him; and he kissed them and embraced them.

Romans 8:14-15a
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption.

John 6:27a
Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.

III. Meditation: Our eyes are dim.
Our eyes are dim,
and we do not see well.
Take from our spirit
all iniquity and deceit,
and show us what
to kiss and to embrace.

Like slaves, we work in fear
for food that perishes.

Lead us by your Spirit,
that we may be not slaves,
but your adopted children,
and freely through the Son of Man
receive the food
which for eternal life endures.
