I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 5, 27, 51
Exodus 7:8-24
2 Corinthians 2:14-3:6
Mark 10:1-16

II. Selections
Psalm 51:8
Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.

Exodus 7:21
...and the fish in the river died. The river stank so that the Egyptians could not drink its water, and there was blood throughout the whole land of Egypt.

2 Corinthians 2:14
But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him.

Mark 10:1
[ Jesus] left that place and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan. And crowds again gathered around him; and, as was his custom, he again taught them.

III. Meditation: Can crushed bones rejoice?
Can the bones that you have crushed rejoice?
When the water has been turned to blood,
can it turn back to water?
Can the stench of dead fish and putrid blood
be cleansed from the land?

Let me hear joy and gladness;
may the crowds return to hear Jesus' teaching;
may Christ lead us in triumphal procession
and through us spread in every place
the fragrance that comes from knowing him.
