I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Psalms 136:4

Exodus 18:8
Then Moses told is father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardship that had beset them on the way, and how the LORD had delivered them.

1 John 2:10
Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling.

Mark 16:20
And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.

III. Meditation: Delivered and loved
You do great wonders,
and your steadfast love endures forever;
from hardship that has beset us on the way,
you have delivered us.

Work with us as we go out and proclaim the good news,
and if our message is worthy, confirm it.
Fill us with your steadfast love, that we may love others,
live in the light, and thereby free ourselves from stumbling.
