I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Job 38:1-11; 42:1-5
Revelations 19:4-16
John 1:29-34

II. Selections
Psalm 103:14
For he knows how we were made;
he remembers that we are dust.

Job 38:4
" ...Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding. ..."

Revelations 19:9a
And the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb."

John 1:29
The next day [ John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! ..."

III. Meditation: Unequals
You know us through and through-
how we are made,
that we are dust,
that we fall far short of what you made us to be.

We comprehend very little about you;
still, you have given us as much as we need to know.
You have given us the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world.
Blessed are those you have invited to his marriage supper.
