I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 51, 65, 142
Joshua 4:19-5:1, 10-15
Romans 12:9-21
Matthew 26:17-25

II. Selections
Psalm 142:3
When my spirit is faint,
you know my way.
In the path where I walk
they have hidden a trap for me.

Joshua 5:1
When all the kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted, and there was no longer any spirit in them, because of the Israelites.

Romans 12:11
Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.

Matthew 26:20-21
When it was evening, [ Jesus] took his place with the twelve, and while they were eating, he said, "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me."

III. Meditation: A trap in my path

Lord Jesus, you understand how it feels
to walk down a path past a hidden trap.
Such a peril can melt the heart,
can make the spirit faint.

Yet a trap in your path did not sap your zeal
or diminish the ardor of your spirit.
Walk with me to serve you;
you know my way.
