I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 5, 29, 82
Job 32:1-10, 19-33:1, 19-28
Acts 13:44-52
John 10:19-30

II. Selections
Psalm 82:3
" ...Give justice to the weak and the orphan;
maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute. ... " [ God in the divine council]

Job 32:7-8
" ...I said, 'Let days speak
and many years teach wisdom.'
But truly it is the spirit in a mortal,
the breath of the Almighty, that makes for understanding. ... " [ Elihu]

Acts 13:46
Then both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken first to you. Since you reject it and judge yourselves to be unworthy of eternal life, we are now turning to the Gentiles. ... " [ speaking to the Jews in Antioch of Pisidia]

John 10:24
So the Jews gathered around [ Jesus] and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."

III. Meditation: The breath of the Almighty

Instant awareness of divine wisdom
is what we want-don't keep us in suspense-
until, of course, we hear your word,
and realize it's not what we wanted or expected.

Give justice to the weak and orphan;
maintain the right of the lowly and destitute-
sounds like youthful idealism ...nice,
but hard to implement on our budget.

Older doesn't always mean wiser
in understanding your word.
Whatever our age, it is your Spirit within us
that makes for understanding.
