I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Micah 5:1-4, 10-15
Revelation 9:1-12

II. Selections
Psalm 143:10
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
Let your good spirit lead me
on a level path.

Micah 5:13b
...and you shall bow down no more
to the work of your hands ...

Revelation 9:6
And in those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them.

Luke 10:30
Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. ... "

III. Meditation: Victims of robbers

We pray for those who have fallen into the hands of robbers,
individual or corporate or governmental robbers,
thieves who have stripped their victims
and left them in a virtual Apocalypse,
half dead, and seeking to be dead.

Forbid that we should bow down
to worship the work of our hands,
or to honor the works of the robbers.
You are our God; teach us to do your will,
and let your good spirit lead us to help the victims.
