I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 51, 65, 142
Isaiah 42:1-17
Ephesians 3:1-13
Mark 2:13-22

II. Selections
Psalm 65:5
By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance,
O God of our salvation;
you are the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest seas.

Isaiah 42:6-7
I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness,
I have taken you by the hand and kept you;
I have given you as a covenant to the people,
a light to the nations,
to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.

Ephesians 3:1
This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles ...

Mark 2:17
When Jesus heard this, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners."

III. Meditation: Who needs a physician? ;

O God of our salvation-

By awesome deeds you have delivered us,
and in righteousness you have called us.

You have taken us by the hand and kept us, and healed us;
and you have given us to do your work of healing and liberation.

You have called sinners to be prisoners of Christ Jesus
for the sake of others who like them need a physician.
