I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 1, 33, 89:1-18
Isaiah 59:1-21
2 Timothy 1:15-2:13
Mark 10:1-16

II. Selections
Psalm 33:21
Our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.

Isaiah 59:14
Justice is turned back,
and righteousness stands at a distance;
for truth stumbles in the public square,
and uprightness cannot enter.

2 Timothy 2:13
...if we are faithless, he remains faithful-
for he cannot deny himself.

Mark 10:15
" ...Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." [ Jesus reproving his disciples for stopping visits by little children]

III. Meditation: Truth stumbles in the public square

God, even when we are faithless,
you remain faithful.
Our heart is glad in you;
we trust in your holy name.

But we see justice turned back,
righteousness standing at a distance.
Truth stumbles in the public square,
and uprightness cannot enter.

Open our heart to your kingdom,
like the heart of a little child;
and help us work for truth and justice
in our lives and in the public square.
