I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 32, 42, 84, 150
Jeremiah 6:9-15
I Corinthians 6:12-20
Mark 5:1-20

II. Selections
Psalm 150:3-4
Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!

Jeremiah 6:10
To whom shall I speak and give warning,
that they may hear?
See, their ears are closed,
they cannot listen.
The word of the LORD is to them an object of scorn;
they take no pleasure in it.

I Corinthians 6:19
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?

Mark 5:19
But Jesus refused, and said to [ the demoniac whom he had healed], "Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you."

III. Meditation: Your word an object of scorn?

We are not our own; we are yours.
For this we praise you with trumpet sound,
lute and harp, tambourine and dance, strings and pipe.

We must tell our friends how much you have done for us,
and what mercy you have shown us; we must
open their ears to your word.
