I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 9, 99, 118
Ezekiel 11:14-25
Hebrews 7:1-17
Luke 10:17-24

II. Selections
Psalm 99:6
Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel also was among those who called on his name.
They cried to the LORD, and he answered them.

Ezekiel 11:24
The spirit lifted me up and brought me in a vision by the spirit of God into Chaldea, to the exiles. Then the vision that I had seen left me.

Hebrews 7:13
Now the one of whom these things are spoken [ i.e., Jesus] belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.

Luke 10:24
" ...For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it." [ Jesus to his disciples]

III. Meditation: You answered them

Long the line connecting those who have known you:
Moses and Aaron and Samuel were your priests;
Ezekiel, full of visions, prophesied in Babylon;
Jesus served as prophet, priest, and more-
many had waited, desiring to know him.
Connect us to Jesus and the long line.
