I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

2 Corinthians 9:1-15
Luke 18:15-30

II. Selections
Psalm 63:4
So I will bless you as long as I live;
I will lift up my hands and call on your name.

Deuteronomy 29:14-15
I am making this covenant, sworn by an oath, not only with you who stand here with us today before the LORD our God, but also with those who are not here with us today. [ Moses to the Israelites]

2 Corinthians 9:12
...for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God.

Luke 18:17
" ...Truly I tell you, who ever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it."

III. Meditation: When good things happen

When we lift up our hands to bless you and call on your name,
our covenant with you is shared by those standing with us,
by generations past, and by generations yet to be born.
Our offering, when truly given to help the needy,
overflows with many thanksgivings to you.
And when we receive your kingdom as
a little child, it is then we enter it.
