II. Selections
Psalm 36:11
Do not let the foot of the arrogant tread on me,
or the hand of the wicked drive me away.
1 Samuel 8:19-20
But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, "No! but we are determined to have a king over us, so that we also may be like other nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles."
Acts 7:6
" ...And God spoke in these terms, that his descendants would be resident aliens in a country belonging to others, who would enslave them and mistreat them during four hundred years. ... " [ Stephen, before the Council]
Luke 22:24
A dispute also arose among [ the disciples] as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
III. Meditation: The foot of the arrogant
When we forget that for centuries your people were slaves,
when in arrogance our foot treads on the oppressed,
when in wickedness our hand drives people away,
forgive us.
When in determination to have our own way,
we refuse to listen to those who speak for you;
when our motivation is to be like others, not like you;
when we want to find another to fight our battles for us-
forgive us.
When we dispute among ourselves
which of us is to be regarded as the greatest,
O Servant Lord,
forgive.
