I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 63, 100, 122
1 Samuel 14:16-30
Acts 9:10-19a
Luke 23:32-43

II. Selections
Psalm 100:3
Know that the LORD is God.
It is he that made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

1 Samuel 14:17
Then Saul said to the troops that were with him, "Call the roll and see who is gone from us." When they called the roll, Jonathan and his armor-bearer were not there.

Acts 9:15
But the Lord said to [ Ananias], "Go, for [ Saul] is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel ..."

Luke 23:33
When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

III. Meditation: The roll call

King Saul called the roll
to find out who was gone
and learned it was his son.
You did not need
to call the roll
to learn about yours.

Ananias was your instrument
to rescue another Saul,
the one whom you chose
to bring your name
before Gentiles and kings
and the people of Israel.

You made us, we are yours;
we are your people,
sheep of your pasture.
Teach us, like Ananias
and like that second Saul,
to answer your roll call.
