I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 32, 130, 139, 148
1 Samuel 31:1-13
Acts 15:12-21
Mark 5:21-43

II. Selections
Psalm 130:7
O Israel, hope in the LORD!
For with the LORD there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.

1 Samuel 31:6
So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died together on the same day.

Acts 15:12
The whole assembly kept silence, and listened to Barnabas and Paul as they told of all the signs and wonders that God had done through them among the Gentiles.

Mark 5:25-26
Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse.

III. Meditation: We hope in you

We hope in you,
for with you there is steadfast love,
and with you great power to redeem.

The king is dead,
and all three of his sons,
his armor-bearer and all his men ...
but we hope in you.

Barnabas and Paul
tell of the signs and wonders
that you have done among the Gentiles,
and we hope in you.

There is a woman,
twelve years of hemorrhages-
no help from physicians, and money gone;
she will hope in you.

We hope in you,
for with you there is steadfast love,
and with you great power to redeem.
