I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

II. Selections
Psalm 100:2
Worship the LORD with gladness;
come into his presence with singing.

2 Samuel 6:5
David and all the house of Israel were dancing before the LORD with all their might, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.

Acts 17:28
" ...For 'In him we live and move and have our being'; as even some of your own poets have said,
'For we too are his offspring.' ... "

Mark 8:6
Then [ Jesus] ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them to the crowd.

III. Meditation: Rejoice, give thanks, and sing

We are your offspring, and in you we live and move and have our being.
Surely it is right to rejoice and sing when we are in your presence.

David and the whole house of Israel sang and danced before you,
accompanied by lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.

Following the example of Jesus, it is also right to give thanks
for what we have received from you, and for the chance to share.
