I. Readings
Psalms 9, 62, 73
2 Samuel 7:1-17
Acts 18:1-11
Mark 8:11-21
II. Selections
Psalm 62:11-12a
Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
That power belongs to God,
and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
2 Samuel 7:5
Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the LORD: Are you the one to build me a house to live in?
Acts 18:2
[ In Corinth Paul] found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them ...
Mark 8:17
And becoming aware of [ what his disciples were saying], Jesus said to them, "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? ... "
III. Meditation: Power and steadfast love belong to you.
When the Jews were expelled from Rome, they had reason
to doubt your power or your compassion-perhaps both.
When David wanted to build a Temple for you
you reminded him that you did not need his help.
When his disciples questioned your power and compassion,
Jesus reminded them of evidence to the contrary.
