I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 24, 25, 110
Jeremiah 31:10-14
Galatians 3:15-22
Luke 1:67-80

II. Selections
Psalm 25:5
Lead me in your truth, and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all day long.

Jeremiah 31:11
For the LORD has ransomed Jacob,
and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.

Galatians 3:21
Is the law then opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could make alive, then righteousness would indeed come through the law.

Luke 1:78-79
" ...By the tender mercy of our God,
the dawn from on high will break upon us,
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace." [ Zechariah's prophecy after the birth of John]

III. Meditation: We wait for you

All day long we wait for you. Lead us in your truth
and teach us, for you are the God of our salvation.

We do not become righteous by following the law,
nor does it make us come alive. Hands too strong
for us hold us captive, but you have redeemed us.

As we sit in death's shadow, by your tender mercy the
dawn from on high will break in upon us and give light
to our darkness, guiding our feet into the way of peace.
