I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 27, 46, 114, 148
Isaiah 55:3-9
Colossians 3:1-17
John 14:6-14

II. Selections
Psalm 148:7-8
Praise the LORD from the earth,
you sea monsters and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and frost,
stormy wind fulfilling his command!

Isaiah 55:9
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Colossians 3:1
So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

John 14:9
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? ... "

III. Meditation: Even the sea monsters

Even the sea monsters and the deeps know how to praise you,
even fire and hail, snow and frost, and stormy wind obey you;
but we do not.

Your ways are higher than our ways,
and your thoughts than our thoughts;
and we must seek the things above,
where Christ sits, at your right hand.

We must not complain we have not seen you;
for we have seen Jesus, and if we know Jesus,
we know you.
