I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 16, 62, 97
Genesis 4:17-26
Hebrews 3:1-11
John 1:43-51

II. Selections
Psalm 97:1
The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice;
let the many coastlands be glad!

Genesis 4:25-26
Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, for she said, "God has appointed for me another child instead of Abel, because Cain killed him." To Seth also a son was born, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to invoke the name of the LORD.

Hebrews 3:3
Yet Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.

John 1:50
Jesus answered [ Nathanael], "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. ... "

III. Meditation: The time comes

Whether we suffer loss or encounter joy,
the time comes to invoke your name.

Jesus, we have seen great things from you;
and we confess you are worthy of glory.

You have "built the house"-let the earth
rejoice and the many coastlands be glad.
