I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 25, 34, 91
Genesis 37:12-24
1 Corinthians 1:20-31
Mark 1:14:28

II. Selections
Psalm 91:1
You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty ...

Genesis 37:14a
So [ Jacob] said to [ Joseph], "Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock; and bring back word to me."

1 Corinthians 1:26
Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.

Mark 1:17
And Jesus said to [ Simon and Andrew], "Follow me and I will make you fish for people."

III. Meditation: Sheltered but called

We live in your shelter, abide in your shadow;
and we are grateful for your protection; for
we are not wise, powerful, or well born.

Yet the time comes when you send us out
to see whether your other children are well,
even call us to follow you and care for them.
