I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 97, 115, 124
Exodus 12:14-27a
1 Corinthians 15:1-11
Mark 16:1-8

II. Selections
Psalm 124:7
We have escaped like a bird
from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
and we have escaped.

Exodus 12:26-27a
" ...And when your children ask you, 'What do you mean by this observance?' you shall say, 'It is the passover sacrifice to the LORD ...' " [ Moses to the elders of Israel]

1 Corinthians 15:1
Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which you also stand ...

Mark 16:6
But [ the young man dressed in a white robe] said to [ the women], "Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. ... "

III. Meditation: Like a bird

We look for you in the wrong place;
remind us of the good news we heard,
and received, and in which we stand:

From the snare of the fowlers,
he escaped like a bird;
you broke the snare,
and he escaped;
and we, too.

When our children ask us,
"What does it mean?"
we must say that
you broke the snare,
and he escaped like a bird,
and we escaped with him, so
remember to look in the right place.
