I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 25, 40, 84
Ezekiel 39:21-29
1 John 3:1-10
Matthew 10:24-33

II. Selections
Psalm 84:1
How lovely is your dwelling place,
O LORD of hosts!

Ezekiel 39:28c-29
I will leave none of them behind; and I will never again hide my face from them, when I pour out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord GOD.

1 John 3:2
Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.

Matthew 10:24-25a
" ...A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. ..." [ Jesus to the twelve as he sent them out]

III. Meditation: What we are, what we will be

Lovely is your dwelling place.
When we see you as you are,
then we will be like you.

Now we are your children.
Do not hide your face from us;
pour your Spirit out upon us-

leave none of us behind, O God.
As disciples, servants, make us
like our teacher and our master.
