I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Matthew 25:37-39

And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' ... "

III. Meditation: Reflections before crossing over

Before we cross our Jordan, it is good to pause and ponder-
to ponder your steadfast love and the hope we have in you.

If Paul is right when he says that all things are from you,
and through you, and to you, that must include your love.

Yes, first and foremost, your steadfast love. From you
and through you comes the power to care for the needy.

And the way we return our love to you, and give you glory,
is to love the hungry, thirsty, alien, naked, sick, imprisoned.

So let your steadfast love be upon us, even as we hope in you;
and from you and through you and to you be the glory forever.
