I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 56, 111, 118
Hosea 14:1-9
Acts 28:17-31
Luke 9:37-50

II. Selections
Psalm 111:7
The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy.

Hosea 14:5
I will be like the dew to Israel;
he shall blossom like the lily,
he shall strike root like the forests of Lebanon.

Acts 28:20
" ...For this reason therefore I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is for the sake of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain." [ Paul to the leaders of the Jews in Rome]

Luke 9:43b-44
While everyone was amazed at all that [ Jesus] was doing, he said to his disciples, "Let these words sink into your ears. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands."

III. Meditation: Your hands and our hands

The works of your hands are faithful and
just; all your precepts are trustworthy.

You have been like the dew to your people;
you made them blossom like the lily and
strike root like the forests of Lebanon.

For the hope of your people, Paul was bound
with a chain; and Jesus was betrayed into
hands that were not faithful and just.
Make our hands like your hands.
