I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I. Readings
Psalms 23, 66, 108
Zechariah 9:9-16
1 Peter 3:13-22
Matthew 21:1-13

II. Selections
Psalm 23:3
...[ the LORD] restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name's sake.

Zechariah 9:16
On that day the LORD their God will save them
for they are the flock of his people;
for like the jewels of a crown
they shall shine on his land.

1 Peter 3:18
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit ...

Matthew 21:10
When [ Jesus] entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?"

III. Meditation: Who is he?

The crowds ask, "Who is this Jesus?"
The question haunts us; but we know
he is the one who restores our soul,
leads us in right paths for his name's sake;
the one who suffered for sins once for all,
the righteous for the unrighteous,
in order to bring us to you.

This Jesus was put to death in the flesh,
but made alive in the spirit, that he may
save the flock of his people; for like the
jewels of a crown they shall shine in the land.
