I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Psalm 116:7
Return, O my soul, to your rest,
for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.

Zechariah 13:5
...but each of them will say, "I am no prophet, I am a tiller of the soil; for the land has been my possession since my youth."

Ephesians 1:17-19
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.

Luke 19:13
" ...[ The nobleman] summoned ten of his slaves, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them, 'Do business with these until I come back.' ... " [ Jesus telling the parable of the ten pounds]

III. Meditation: I am no prophet

I am no prophet, for the land has been my profession since my youth; but I pray that you may give me a spirit of wisdom to enlighten the eyes of my heart. You have dealt bountifully with me. May I invest well the bounty which you have given me, for the hope to which you have called me, through the working of your great power.
