I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Our Maker and King

I. Readings
Psalms 43, 149, 31, 143
Genesis 43:16-34
1 Corinthians 7:10-24
Mark 5:1-20

II. Selections
Psalm 149:2
Let Israel be glad in its Maker;
let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.

Genesis 43:34
Portions were taken to them from Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank and were merry with him.

1 Corinthians 7:17a
However that may be, let each of you lead the life that the Lord has assigned, to which God called you.

Mark 5:20
And [the man who had been possessed] went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.

III. Meditation

We rejoice in you, for you are our King;
we are glad in you, for you are our Maker.

You have called us to life and assigned us our role—
given us five-fold portions like Joseph gave Benjamin.

Were we to proclaim how much you have
done for us, everyone would be amazed.
