I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Giving and Receiving

I. Readings
Psalms 5, 147:1-11, 27, 51
Genesis 45:16-28
1 Corinthians 8:1-13
Mark 6:13-29

II. Selections
Psalm 27:2
When evildoers assail me
to devour my flesh—
my adversaries and foes—
they shall stumble and fall.

Genesis 45:26-27
And [Joseph’s brothers] told [Jacob], “Joseph is still alive! He is even ruler over all the land of Egypt.” He was stunned; he could not believe them. But when they told him all the words of Joseph that he had said to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived.

1 Corinthians 8:1b
Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

Mark 6:22
When [Herod’s] daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.”

III. Meditation

Herod promised to give his daughter whatever she wished,
but life’s most important gifts were beyond his power to bestow.

He knew how to puff himself up, and puff up his daughter;
but Herod did not know how to build up in love.

Jacob received gifts from his son Joseph, and through Joseph
from you—gifts beyond anything he could have dreamed.

Protect us from our adversaries—pride, arrogance, greed—
and open us to receive your free gift of grace.
