I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

In Your Name

I. Readings

Exodus 25:1-22
Colossians 3:1-17

II. Selections
Psalm 23:3b
[The LORD] leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.

Exodus 25:1-2
The LORD said to Moses: Tell the Israelites to take for me an offering; from all whose hearts prompt them to give you shall receive the offering for me.

Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Matthew 4:18
As [Jesus] walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen.

III. Meditation

Lord Jesus,
you saw two brothers casting a net.

It was an ordinary thing they were doing,
for they were fishermen.

You led them away from the ordinary and
called them to the extraordinary.

Call us, as you called them; and lead us
in right paths for your name’s sake.

Prompt our hearts to give you our lives
as offering. Whatever we do,

in word or deed, may we do it in your name
and give thanks to you.
