I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

The Way Blocked

I. Readings
Psalms 47, 147:12-20, 68, 113
Exodus 34:1-17
1 Thessalonians 2:13-20
Matthew 5:21-26

II. Selections
Psalm 113:3
From the rising of the sun to its setting
the name of the LORD is to be praised.

Exodus 34:1
The LORD said to Moses, “Cut two tablets of stone like the former ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets, which you broke. … ”

1 Thessalonians 2:18
For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, wanted to again and again—but Satan blocked our way.

Matthew 5:22
“…But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire. … ” [Jesus to the crowds on the mountain]

III. Meditation

How often I have wanted to be reconciled
to those I have offended before I came to
worship you; but Satan blocked the way
(or I did the blocking through my anger).

Jesus warned against being angry with a brother
or sister. Still, you were patient with Moses; when
in anger he broke your tablets, you replaced them.
Will you repair the damage inflicted by my anger?

God in your mercy, forgive my angry ways.
Let me praise your name from the rising of the sun
to its setting, and let love for brother and sister
be an integral part of the praising.
