I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

And Your Faithfulness by Night

I. Readings
Psalms 92, 149, 23, 114
Numbers 11:16-17, 24-29
Ephesians 2:11-22
Matthew 7:28-8:4

II. Selections
Psalm 92:1-2
It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night…

Numbers 11:29
But Moses said to [Joshua], “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit on them!”

Ephesians 2:17-18
So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.

Matthew 8:2
…and there was a leper who came to [Jesus] and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.”

III. Meditation

O Most High,

Make me free from jealousy, like Moses;
let me be trusting, like the leper.

Grant that I may accept the peace that you proclaim
and that in the Spirit I may have access to the Father.

May I declare your steadfast love in the morning
and your faithfulness by night;

for it is good to give you thanks
and to sing praises to your name.
