I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Things Too Wonderful

I. Readings
Psalms 103, 150, 117, 139
Job 38:1-11, 42:1-5
Revelation 19:4-16
John 1:29-34

II. Selections
Psalm 103:13-14
As a father has compassion for his children,
      so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him.
For he knows how we were made;
      he remembers that we are dust.

Job 42:3b
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
      things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

Revelation 19:7-8
“…Let us rejoice and exult
      and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
      and his bride has made herself ready;
to her it has been granted to be clothed
      with fine linen, bright and pure”—
      for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.

John 1:31
“…I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” [John the Baptizer, when he saw Jesus approaching]

III. Meditation

Like Job, we do not understand what we say;
like John the Baptizer, may we act upon the
little we know, however limited it may be.

We are made of dust;
have compassion on us.

May the righteous deeds of the saints
who came before us clothe us in linen as
we rejoice and exult and give you the glory.
