I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Confident In Your Steadfast Love

Ecclesiastes 6:1-12
Acts 10:9-23
Luke 12:32-40

II. Selections
Psalm 66:20
Blessed be God,
because he has not rejected my prayer
or removed his steadfast love from me.

Ecclesiastes 6:12
For who knows what is good for mortals while they live the few days of their vain life, which they pass like a shadow? For who can tell them what will be after them under the sun?

Acts 10:19-20
While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Look, three men are searching for you. Now get up, go down, and go with them without hesitation; for I have sent them.”

Luke 12:32
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. … ” [Jesus to his disciples]

III. Meditation

We bless your name, O Lord God,
because you do not reject our prayers
or remove your steadfast love from us.

Without you we live our days in vain,
and they pass like a shadow. Who
can tell us what the future will hold?

Take away our fear; make us secure
in the knowledge that it is your good
purpose to give us your kingdom.

Then we will be ready to go where
you send us—without hesitation—
ever confident in your steadfast love.
