I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

The Scroll of Your Wisdom--August 29, 2010

I. Readings

Psalms 108, 150, 66, 23
Job 11:1-9, 13-20
Revelation 5:1-14
Matthew 5:1-12

II. Selections
Psalm 66:18-19
If I had cherished iniquity in my heart
The Lord would not have listened.
But truly God has listened,
he has given heed to the words of my prayer.

Job 11:5-6
“…But oh, that God would speak,
and open his lips to you,
and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom!
      For wisdom is many-sided.
Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves. … ”
[Zophar the Naamathite to Job]

Rev. 5:4-5
And I began to weep bitterly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Matthew 5:8
“…Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. … ” [Jesus, on the mountain, to his disciples]

III. Meditation

Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see you.

When we cherish iniquity in our heart,
we block ourselves off from you.

For then you do not heed our prayers,
and we do not know your word to us;

your wisdom remains a secret to us,
and our guilt remains buried inside us.

Who can open the scroll of your wisdom?
The One you sent us to make our hearts pure.
