I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Praise him with trumpet sound;
      praise him with lute and harp!

      praise him with strings and pipe!

Job 26:14
“…These are indeed but the outskirts of [God’s] ways;
      and how small a whisper do we hear of him!
      But the thunder of his power who can understand?”
[Job, in response to his critics]

Revelation 14:2-3a
And I heard a voice from heaven like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder; the voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps, and they sing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders.

Matthew 5:14
“…You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. … ” [Jesus to his disciples and the crowds on the mountain]

III. Meditation

Your voice from heaven, like the sound of many waters;
your voice from heaven, like the sound of booming thunder;
the loud thunder of your power, who can understand?

A voice from heaven, like the sound of harpists playing;
a voice from heaven, like the song of harpists singing;
playing, singing praises to you as they bow before the throne.

Your voice from heaven, like the sound of Jesus speaking,
speaking of a light that shines and that cannot be concealed,
speaking of hilltop city that will always be revealed.

Glory, glory, glory to you,
praise with pipe and praise with reed,
praise with tambourine and trumpet,
praise with dance and praise with deed.
