I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Light to See What Matters--Oct. 26, 2010

I. Readings
Psalms 12, 146, 36, 7
Jonah 3:1-4:11
Revelation 11:14-19
Luke 11:27-36

II. Selections
Psalm 146:5-7
Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
      whose hope is in the LORD their God,
who made heaven and earth,
      the sea, and all that is in them;
who keeps faith forever;
      who executes justice for the oppressed;
      who gives food to the hungry.

Jonah 4:10
Then the LORD said [to Jonah], “You are concerned about the bush, for which you did not labor and which you did not grow; it came into being in a night and perished in a night. …”

Revelation 11:15
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,
      “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord
            and of his Messiah,
      and he will reign forever and ever.”

Luke 11:35
“…Therefore consider whether the light in you is not darkness. …” [Jesus to the crowd]

III. Meditation

We who are full of darkness need you—
need you to change our darkness into light.

We are concerned over trivial things,
things for which we did not labor and
which we did not grow; things that come
into being in a night and perish in a night.

With your trumpet awaken us to see what really matters.
Everything in the kingdom of this world is subject to you,
and you shall reign forever and ever. You are our help.

Our hope is in you, who made heaven and earth and seas
and all that is in them; you, who keep faith forever; you, who
execute justice for the oppressed; you, who give food to the hungry.
