I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Your Right Hand Upholds Me--Oct. 23, 2010

I. Readings

Psalms 122, 149, 100, 63
Micah 7:1-7
Revelation 10:1-11
Luke 11:1-13

II. Selections
Psalm 63:8
My soul clings to you;
      your right hand upholds me.

Micah 7:1
Woe is me! For I have become like one who,
      after the summer fruit has been gathered,
      after the vintage has been gleaned,
finds no cluster to eat;
      there is no first-ripe fig for which I hunger.

Revelation 10:4
And when the seven thunders had sounded, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.”

Luke 11:11
“…Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? … ” [Jesus to his disciples]

III. Meditation

When woe overwhelms me and I think all is lost,
your right hand upholds me.

When the thunders sound and I don’t know what to write,
your right hand upholds me.

When I ask for a fish, you do not give a snake;
your right hand upholds me.

My soul clings to you; I will bless you as long as I live,
for your right hand upholds me.
