I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

The Eyes of Our Hearts--Nov. 25, 2010

O God, let your ears be attentive to our supplications.
We pray you, give us a spirit of wisdom, a spirit of
revelation, as we come to know you; so with the
eyes of our hearts enlightened, we will know
the hope to which you have called us.

Forbid that we should resist your kingship;
but if we do, then refine us as one refines silver;
test us as gold is tested. We will call on your name;
and you will answer us; and you will say, “They are my
people”; and we will say, “The Father of glory is our God.”

Selected Verses
Psalm 130:2b
Let your ears be attentive
      to the voice of my supplications!

Zechariah 13:9
And I will put this third into the fire,
      refine them as one refines silver,
      and test them as gold is tested.
They will call on my name,
      and I will answer them.
I will say, “They are my people”;
      and they will say, “The LORD is our God.”

Ephesians 1:17-18a
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you…

Luke 19:27
But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.
