I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Sad Because of His Wealth--Nov. 22, 2010

The rich man, the very rich man,
became sad because of his wealth.

He had received your invitation
to divest himself of money and
possessions, and to follow you.
But he could not accept the offer.

He would not take the opportunity
to let his wealth work for the good
of all. He didn’t trust in you enough
to know you would make him strong.

He was not ready to give you thanks
for the invitation to be your disciple
and to tell of your wonderful deeds.
Am I different from that rich man?

When Jesus heard this, he said to the ruler, “There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich.
