I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Where Is Faith to Be Found?--Nov. 19, 2010

Where is faith to be found on earth?
It is not to be found in our hearts
when we fear to give our material
things to help the hungry and poor.

We are afraid we ourselves will be
in need if we give too much away—
if only we could trust your generosity
and share your love for the needy!

We lack the patient trust of a farmer who
plants her seeds in expectation of a harvest;
thus we do not pray with conviction that you
will hear our supplication and accept our prayer.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.

The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.
