I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

For the Needy in Haiti--Dec. 4, 2010

Merciful God, you have pity on the weak and needy,
saving them from oppression, redeeming their lives.

Provide for your people a shade by day from the heat,
and by night a refuge, shelter from storm and disease,

that they may not perish, but endure and gain their souls.
We ask in the name of Jesus, who died and rose again.

Selected Verses
Psalm 72:13-14
He has pity on the weak and the needy,
      and saves the lives of the needy.
From oppression and violence he redeems their life;
      and precious is their blood in his sight.

Isaiah 4:5-6
Then the LORD will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over its places of assembly a cloud by day and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night. Indeed over all the glory there will be a canopy. It will serve as a pavilion, a shade by day from the heat, and a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain.

1 Thessalonians 4:14
For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.

Luke 21:17-19
“…You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls. … ” [Jesus to his disciples]
