I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Savior of Those Who Seek Refuge--Dec. 8, 2010

Lord Jesus, when self-righteous zealots demanded a strict
administration of justice, at least for others,
you turned the focus back on their sin.

Thus you wondrously showed your steadfast love
as savior of those who seek refuge in you.

How long, O Lord? How long will the helpless suffer
from the hands of the haughty?

We pray for them, for the helpless—even for their persecutors—
that all may come to know your will and hear your call,
to the glory of your name.

Lectionary Readings
Psalms 50, 147:1-11, 53, 17
Isaiah 6:1-13
2 Thessalonians 1:1-12
John 7:53-8:11

Selected Verses
Psalms 17:7
Wondrously show your steadfast love,
O savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.

Isaiah 6:11
Then I said, “How long, O Lord?” And he said:
      “Until cities lie waste
            without inhabitant,
      and houses without people,
and the land is utterly desolate…”

2 Thessalonians 1:12
To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

John 8:5
“…Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” [The scribes and Pharisees to Jesus, about the woman caught in adultery]
