I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

How Awesome This Place--Jan. 3, 2011

Strangers and foreigners on this earth,
we search for a homeland. We see
promises from afar, but only now
and then do we realize we are
standing at heaven’s gate,
at the house of God.

The Good Shepherd,
greeting us at the gate,
you welcome us, invite us in.
You satisfy us when we are thirsty,
when hungry, fill us with good things.
You have even laid down your life for us.
How very awesome this place where you are!

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 111, 145, 107, 15
Genesis 28:10-22
Hebrews 11:13-22
John 10:7-17

Selected Verses
Ps. 107:9
For he satisfies the thirsty,
and the hungry he fills with good things.

Genesis 28:17
And [Jacob] was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Hebrews 11:13-14
All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.

John 10:11
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. …” [Jesus]
