I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Your Word Is Not Chained--Feb. 9, 2011

Lord Jesus, you showed your love for the children.
Make me like a child, ready to accept your mercy.

You are ready to save, but I am too much the scoffer.
It is a barrier that keeps me from receiving your love.

Lord, help me to remember you, raised from the dead.
Even if I am chained by circumstance, your word is not.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 89:1-18; 147:1-11; 1; 33
Isa. 59:1-21
2 Tim. 1:15-2:13
Mark 10:1-16

Selected Verses
Ps. 1:1
Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of the scoffers…

Isa. 59:1-2
See, the Lord's hand is not too short to save,
nor his ear too dull to hear.
Rather, your iniquities have been barriers
      between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.

2 Tim. 1:8-9
Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.

Mark 10:16
And [Jesus] took [the little children] up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.
