I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Like the Animals, We Will Perish--Apr. 29, 2011

On its present course, warn scientists,
the entire world is destined for a time
of anguish such has not occurred since
nations first came into existence.

Many who are threatened by measures
recommended to avoid the catastrophe
are angry and skeptical. They ask, by
what authority are such warnings made?

Indeed, some who ask these questions
have convinced themselves that in so
doing they are offering worship to you.
(We mortals are full of arrogant pomp.)

O God, forgive our perilous neglect of
the warnings we have received; and
remove selfish concerns that bind and
blind us, lest all we and animals perish.

The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”

John 16:2-3
“…They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God. And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me. …” [Jesus to his disciples]
